Search for Lasseter's Reef back in 2005

Post by Nightjar on Sun 24 Nov 2013, 7:58 am

First topic message reminder :

With a great deal of help from Sam Lippiatt in California who had been studying the Lasseter story for many years, we put together an expedition back in 2005. Unfortunately due to the heaviest rain since before Harold Lasseter perished we had to turn back because the ground was impassable.
Very frustrating, getting within view with binoculars and having to abandon the journey.
Maybe one day we'll try and organise another trip. Getting past the "locals" is almost as impossible as traversing muddy ground.
Here is a photo story put together after the trip, it's 36 minutes long so pull up a chair and put a few tinnies on ice.

Hi Phil

Unfortunately most of Lasseters info was hearsay and even his family haven't found X marks the spot.

Dick Smith made a token gesture to have a look with his chopper and found nothing apart from a few hundred camels and horses out there.

A south African company were using a DC3 for mapping a large area of country from Alice Springs this way --mainly looking for diamonds but they kept what they find hush hush. They spent a couple of million dollars flying around the country side.

So what ever they originally found back in the 30's to all account is still out there.

was talking to a mate on Saturday who has just come back from a holiday towing his van throughout WA-NT and put me onto an area out there.
U never know unless u have a go--one day

Hours of reading here compiled by John Ross.

My avatar is a super imposed photo I took sitting on top of Schwerin Mural Crescent, above Vladimar Pass that blocked our progress due to the heaviest rain since 1923.
If anyone gets out that way we placed a plaque on the peak. 24°50'56.9386"S 128° 27'11.2803"E
It's quite a climb, over 900ft.

Was that just you and your mate in the left of the photo  lol!
These sort of trips you just take for the adventure. I think we all know our chances but I have no doubt there's a nice quarts reef out there. You see these big ridges that stand at the crest of each hill and go on for miles, they just have to have gold.

Yep, that's my little pet Nightjar.
We had planned to get through to Mt Johnno, magnetic bearing 301.2° only 22.5 km's short of our destination and Lasseter's Lost Reef.  wegr

Phil, There was four of us in two vehicles, 12 months planning.
If you ever plan to venture out there DO NOT mention that you are on a photographic mission, that stalled our trip for about 6 months.
Life revolves very slowly here, and to gain permission the Elders have to unanimously agree to allow ventures into their sacred grounds. The Elders only meet monthly, maybe only every two months, maybe more???
No permission, no entry!
Good luck if you plan a trip.

Cheers

I think at this point it will just be added to the bucket list. We've done well lately ticking a few off but the list goes on.... Cool  If anybody is planning a trip out there we'd be happy to help plan, prepare and tag along.

Post by travelergold on Sun 15 Mar 2015, 2:33 pm

Nightjar, we know the issues about getting permission into any native title lands. We got around that somewhat, but did not say why we were going into there lands. Was lucky to get a job in one of the comunities and that gave us a great headsup and basically as was working there was allowed same rights as locals. We still had to be aware of womens ground and mens ground so if respecting there culture we were granted privileged rights. Am no longer working in the comunity due to bad health issues but am trying to beat that and if able we will be heading out there in 3 or 4 mths to get back in there and get back to an area that we found with gold laying on ground like strawberries ripe for the picking. This area is also difficult to access but with proper preperation and commonsense we should cover most issues.
It is amazing just what is still out there just waiting to be found. TG

We just spent the evening sitting and enjoying these three videos. Thanks guys for entertainment. Thanks Nightjar for the fantastic summary of your trip. Hopefully one day we'll get the chance to join in on a trip in search of Lasseter's reef. If we do we'll be heading out for the adventure. Sure we all love the dream of finding the gold but you have to be realistic. There's no solid evidence to the location or proof that the reef exists at all. I believe Lasseter found a rich gold reef but navigation was obviously a serious issue. For now we'll just have to dream on Very Happy
