Portable AM/FM radio for the bush

Post by Banjo on Tue 14 Oct 2014, 6:12 am

I didn't have a portable radio so I ended up with a Tecsun PL 660 and a Tecsun AN 200 loop antenna after reading an old thread on Whirlpool Forums where a bunch of radio nerds were discussing the best radio's out there.

What are you guys using or do you have any recommendations for everyone ? I know some guys like to leave the world behind when they head bush.
Antenna wise ive read where some guys carry a roll of wire with a weight on the end and lob it up over a branch and then clip or wrap the wire around the antenna ?

Anyway this link may help some make a decision

I've got one of these radios, the PR-D3L
The only place I got crap reception was Paynes Find and was stuck listening to ABC Radio.

Sangeans get a good rap.
Do you ever muck about with it and see where you can pick stations up from ?

i go bush for peace and quiet not to listen to some busted ass radio telling me the world has been blown up coz the degree of care is ziltch.

go bush and enjoy the bush for what it is --no home and away--no news --no nothing apart from finding some color if I get lucky.

I agree Oneday
I like the sound of the bush
The last thing I want to hear is anything to do with a wireless, sound systems and TV
Enjoy the sounds, have a conversation around the camp fire with ya mates and sleep like a baby hahaha!

Yep i'm the same, when I came over in 2006 in my Lada Niva I didn't even have a working radio in that and couldn't care less what was going on in the world, the only radio I heard in all that time was when Kevin & Bep used to like to listen to the news in the morning over brekky. I didn't even know about the Beaconsfield mine disaster until I rejoined the group.
I bought this one mainly because we are new up here and they recommend to have one through cyclone season, but I am interested to see who picks up what though.

The question is about the type of radio you might take to the bush with you, not "Have a rant and rave about the outside world".
If you don't take a radio with you, why comment.
Believe it or not, some people like to listen to a radio and keep up to date with the news.

Next time you are out in the Eastern Goldfields, tune into Kalgoorlie radio.
You will swear you are back in the 50's and 60's

I did a bit of research on a portable am fm that was good enough to be used anywhere in the WA outback and it pointed to a thirty year old general electric super radio 11-I tracked one down on gumtree here in Perth and have been using it for two years now on trips and it is awesome,it has some good tech for its age that smoothes out the signal coming in -no more drifting out of tune-and as well as 240volt it will take 6 c batteries that will power it for weeks-Dragon

I agree. There is a lot of handy info on the airwaves, waiting to be harnessed, and free of charge.
Especially weather forecasts from the ABC rural transmitters on the country hour weekdays at 12.30 pm.
I would like to add that, having owned a Sangean ATS 505 for 5 years, I find the DIGITECH AR-1748 a far better receiver. It is larger in size, but able to pick up the transpitter near Dalwallinu at MW 531from Marymia, halfway between Meekatharra and Newman. It can also easily be picked up here in Albany. I suspect this is due to the large internal Ferrite Antenna, as any additional external extensions do not improve reception. A local HAM operator could not receive the signal with an EATON and Wire Loop Antenna.
I feel it is a good idea to keep up with the latest in science, sport, news etc. despite the awe inspiring sounds of mother nature. There is nothing to beet that. Very Happy

Darren

Thought I'd revisit this topic with an update.
Last couple of trips, I've been able to pick a radio station from Adelaide but only at night. dunno what the station name is but they play some good old music, not the head banging crap you hear on stations today.
Mostly picked up on MW, LW is full of stuff in a language that is definitely not English Razz
And I was a bit surprised that Easter just gone, I was picking up FM with the car radio in the Sandstone/Mt Magnet area. Dunno where that was coming from.
anyone know if they have FM in Geraldton ?

Cheers
