What can be done with a small 2 stroke motor

Post by Bignuggs on Wed 14 Jan 2015, 10:56 am

I've got Ryobi line trimmer/brush cutter with a 25.4 cc motor and the poxy fuel tank they use crapped itself.
It's cheaper to buy a new whipper snipper than to mess around getting a new fuel tank.
so what suggestions do ya's have to use the motor (and don't be rude Very Happy ) as it's had bugger all use and I'm not throwing it out.
it's gotta be good for something.

Make up a coupling and direct drive a stock standard 12v Alternator for a bush charger.

Good idea Driller, have a question though.
25cc = approx 1hp, would that be enough to drive an alternator?

Cliff/Peter.

If the motor is capable of 1hp., it may require as much as 1/4 hp. to rotate the alternator/fan assembly.
Given 1hp.= 745watts., with 3/4hp. available to generate electricity this could provide 745 x .075 = 558.75w.
(say 550w.)
At a required 12v. battery charging voltage of 14.2 then 550/14.2 = 38.7amps (say 35a.)

No problem turning it into a useful battery charger for the camp.

I wish I could say I had original thought but I cant.

This one needs 2.4 hp for 70 amps.

The Ryobi's are probably the most common of all the line trimmers and some repair shop would have a box full of used bits and pieces, a second hand fuel tank would be a cheap option if you want to get it working, unfortunately the Ryobi's are cheap and nasty and can put even experienced small motor mechanics to the test, so they are often avoided by repairers affraid and just kept to rat a few spare parts off.

I used to have guys come in for the little homelite motors to use for remote controlled speedboats and planes, not sure if the Ryobi motors would be and good for that, as I think the homelite motors were counter rotating so (some motors run clockwise and some anti clockwise) and would run the propellers that were available at the time in the right direction

Maybe it could be used on a small portable dry blower, sluice pump or something?
