Coil for GPX 4500

Post by aussieviking on Sat 06 Jun 2015, 7:51 am

I am planning a trip to Murchison area in WA in July. I have a minelab 4500 with 11 inch dd and mono standard coils. I am thinking of buying another coil but am unsure whether to buy a smaller coil or to try for a larger elliptical coil.I am also not sure of the best coil brand to purchase.
Any thoughts on this topic would be appreciated.

For General prospecting duties i usually use a 17" elliptical Nugget Finder, I find it give good depth and sensitivity on smaller gold, not to mention its a larger coil so you cover a good amount of ground.
For smaller gold or finishing patches or smashed areas, I go to either a 12x7" elliptical nugget finder or 8x6" Sadie.
For deep ground 14" round or 18 - 20" round.
I will only ever use a DD for salt/super trash filled areas, otherwise i don't bother with them usually.

I prefer nugget finder just because of the amazing service and warranty replacements they do.
Coiltek make great coils as well.
If i where in your shoes, i would look at either a 14" round or 17" ellip as an all round bigger coil to cover more ground and give me more depth.

Then i would look at a smaller coil later on.
Hope this helps.

I would personally go with something like this.
Nugget Finder 17 " x 11" Elliptical Mono Advantage Spoked
Most prospectors still using the 4500-5000 will have that coil in their arsenal.

If cost is something that is an issue i would look at coilteks
Coiltek 18" x 12" Elliptical Mono Goldstalker

You could also look at the minelab
Commander 15" x 12" Elliptical Mono

This is just my personal experience with prospecting in W.A I'm sure other people have had different experiences and have sound advice on coils.

I have a 4500 and the best coil I have used so far

Nuggetfinder 14"×9" killer combo

will kill it on the small and you can realy push the detector

I have had the best of luck with the Detech 15x10 Mono E. It's not bump sensitive, very light, and easy to pin-point. Its extremely sensitive to tiny pieces of gold and gets great depth. But if I were to buy just one coil, I would consider the Coiltek Elite 14" as the go to coil. Here in California...a dd is a must to hit some of those spots with a lot of iron rubbish.
