Changes to GeoMap and GeoView file naming conventions. It's gonna screw up yer maps

Post by Wedgetail on Sun 14 Jan 2018, 3:02 pm

All,

Last week APLA bought into a problem that was started by DMIRS not informing anyone about changes to their GeoMap and GeoView systems. Simply out, DMIRS changed the file naming conventions to something different to what they've used so far. But they did it without consultation or advising anyone out here in "publikland" - US!

This would have meant that anyone that uses those systems, and a lot of us do, would have found that their mapping projects would not have updated and we would have been using out of date data for tenement boundaries! That could have made us illegal!

APLA's Webmaster spotted the error and alerted APLA last Friday. We then wrote a cranky email to DMIRS telling they were naughty boys. Within 3 hours I had very contrite DMIRS on the phone admitting they made a mistake and didn't realise so many small businesses and prospectors use those systems. (I was stunned at this admission!)

They've told me that they will now rescind the new naming system as of tomorrow and reinstate the old system and the two systems will run alongside each other for 3 months. So you have 3 months in which to change all yer mapping projects. So, go on, away ya go - it won't fix itself! Rolling Eyes Razz

Any questions phone DMIRS and ask for GeoScience IT Dept. Don't ask me; I don't go out there anymore so I don't need a map! clown

Welcome to the IT world of the WA government.  I've been dealing with it for 28 years and I'm still shaking my head and hearing a rattling sound   lol!
Unfortunately, some bright spark thinks they know better or they are trying to impress the boss and it just screws everyone who has to use the systems.  But I guess they have to justify their salary some how   lol!

Gov departments messing with systems will never change   Razz

Cheers
Cliff
